Day 2: Lijiang

Some photos posted on this page are courtesy of master chin and Chuen Yee

It is a wonderful day we will soon find out.

The sun is lovely. The rain tonight will tell us how fortunate we are today to have such a fine morning and afternoon. Went to the market and have breakfast there. So vibrant, all kinda vege and food and all. Remind me of those morning market in KL.

Breakfast - youtiao, soy bean and tea-leave eggs - yum yum!

We took the opportunity to go to the bank (open on Sunday!!!) to change for RMB. Knowing the expenses ahead, I changed a bit more this time. Then we head off to Black Dragon Pool Park, recommended by the inn lady.

Once we entered the park, we noticed there are photographers helping tourist to take photos, using the lake and the Yulong Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) as background. But we couldnt see the snow mountain at all. So we all think that it is a photoshop trick despite the testimony of the park operator. We later found out that we are wrong. Few weeks after we are back to Singapore, we discover that on clear days, the snow mountain will appear behind the lake. (Tim has a photo on it at his flickr)

So we walked around the lake. Beautiful flowers. So vibrant in colours! Water in the lake is clear, with kois in them. Apparently the clear water that I saw in Lijiang ancient town, flow out from here.

Saw a WWII memorial block as well. Look like the town is not spared from the effects of war.

When we have nearly reached the half way mark, we saw a flight of stairs leading up to Elephant Hill.

The park operator assured us that it takes only half an hour to reach the top. It turn out that we took half an hour to reach the first resting point. Two more resting points before we finally reached the top pagoda. Not many people travel up, supposed the journey is quite tough. We registered out names down, and started marching. Back to the old Huangshan days. We almost wanted to give up. Then a boy and a girl who were ahead of us started to walk up when they see us approaching. I joked to the rest that god send the two here to tease us, and make sure we complete the ascend. Easier to say. We took 1 hour before we reach the top. Not forgetting the 3 angmo Belgium ladies who cheered us up on the last leg. God send them down as cheer leaders =) They kept teasing me for chatting with them. The truth was: i merely enquire how much further up the top was.

Once we have rested on the last pit stop, we climbed and saw some tombs. Apparently some Nasi tribe people have buried their ancestors here. Good fengshui I must say. We walked on for another 15 mins, finally reached the top. This is the pagoda that I saw when I was outside the restaurant.
It seemed so small when I was on the ground. I can see the whole of Lijiang from here. Recognised a water reservoir (which I get to see again when I was on the plane on the way back to Kunming from Shangrila).

The Lion Hill that I was at yesterday and foolishly thought that i was already at the high point in Lijiang, till now.

But still cant see Yulong Snow Mountain, clouded. The air up here is very fresh, and the whole place is very quiet. Windy. Those colourful long fabric flags that the Tibetans hang are flying in the air.

JingJing pointed that there is a mural of some half naked women on the ceiling.

I laughed but in my heart, i tell myself dont anyhow say wrong things, less later kena punished. The punishment came soon enough. On the way down, Jing jing slipped and fell, sprained his ankles. We heard a loud thud. Lucky his camera is not damaged. The journey downward become much more difficult now that he has injured his leg.

We went back to the inn and have lunch in the usual place. Leaving Jingjing in the motel, the 3 of us went out for some souvenir hunting. Lawrence spent a long time bargaining for tea leaves. Yinhuan is taking some BW impressionist pictures outside. I was thinking hard what to buy for my colleagues and housemates. After everyone has done their shopping, we walked around. The drizzle started to come. The rain didnt stop from then on. Throughout the day and night till the next morning when we left Lijiang, it rained on. We hide ourselves in a restaurant and settled our dinner there as well. Then we went back to Inn due to the drizzle.

Yinhuan and I decided to do some night walk and see if there are any good snacks. Not bad, I spotted some corns, sweet one, so unlike the old corn that i ate last night. We walked down the ancient town to a row of BBQ shops. The chinese were having very good time drinking beer and eating bbq food. They sang together and made merry. It was a very lively BBQ street.

We went back to the Inn at about 10pm. JingJing's leg didnt seem to get better. We have to think of what to do our next day plan.
